Selected readings from Saint Leo University authors—March 26

The Department of English, Fine Arts, and Humanities and Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library are hosting a debut of two new chapbooks published by Green Rabbit Press: Love in the Shape of a Warzone by Iraq War veteran and Saint Leo graduate Brooke King; and The Companion of Joy, by Saint Leo creative writing faculty member and founding editor of YellowJacket Press, Gianna Russo.

The authors will be reading selections from their books on Wednesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in Cannon Memorial Library at University Campus. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to celebrate these new publications by Saint Leo University’s ever growing literary press.

Upcoming Blockbusters in Our Library!

Did you know that over 40 books will be adapted and released for the big screen this year? Did you also know that our library carries 10 titles of the biggest must-see films of the year? Leisure reading is a great stress reliever, particularly since a new schedule of classes is about to commence! Located on the second floor of the library, these books are a must read before being seen on the big screen. For the novels we do not carry, our Interlibrary Loan department will order a book for you. There are no excuses not to know the story before you see the film! Happy reading!

Ebook Collections!

As most of the collection at the Cannon Memorial Library is now virtual, we thought there should be a spotlight on our two largest collections, Ebrary and EBSCO’s EBook Collection.

Ebrary is an all-subject collection which now contains over 78,000 ebook titles, many of which can be downloaded to multiple devices, including Android or iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch! First install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer (free online) and soon you can download an entire document as an e-book.

EBSCO’s EBook Collection contains full text digital versions of books (over 80,000) the library has purchased for your use. Please be aware that if you opt to download ebooks, you must create a personal EBSCO account to do so, also requiring Adobe® Digital Editions 1.7.1 or higher for offline viewing. All support information can be found on the EBSCO support page.

As always, titles also can be found through our library homepage’s quick search option. If troubles arise, please contact a librarian at the reference desk at (352)588.8477, or try our new reference system, LibAnswers!

LibAnswers is Here!

Welcome to a New Year and new semester at Saint Leo University! To better assist our patrons’ reference needs, we have implemented a new system: LibAnswers!

Library users can type questions into a LibAnswers box to search a knowledge base of FAQs. These FAQs are uploaded from questions received and answered by SLU librarians, as well as from questions and answers that librarians generate and upload. 

If a satisfactory answer to a question does not appear in the FAQs, library users have the option to submit the question as an email through the LibAnswers question box form. 

Librarians are still available for assistance at the reference desk, by telephone, or through email, but head over to our library page and give LibAnswers a try! The link to LibAnswers can be found on the main library page in a tab next to “Access LibGuides” or at saintleo.libanswers.com.

The SLU Film Society Presents: Pacific Rim

The SLU Film Society presents:

Starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, and Ron Pearlman

In the humble estimation of the Film Society, Pacific Rim has no redeeming social value whatsoever. However, it is a rare and always interesting event when someone like del Toro, one of the world’s most highly skilled directors (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), chooses to make a summer action movie.

Pacific Rim follows the exploits of a group of human robot fighter specialists who must stop the threat presented by the emergence of monsters of the Godzilla/Gamera/Mothera variety. These monsters are bent on destroying Southeast Asia and then, presumably, the world. The result is pure film. This is a movie that makes us very happy.

The film will be shown in English with Spanish subtitles.

The SLU Film Society and the Spanish Club Present: The Impossible

Please join the SLU Film Society and the Spanish Club as they present the film The Impossible.

Starring Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland, the film is based on a true story, depicting a family taking a luxury vacation in Thailand in 2004. Suddenly the historic tsunami hits and obliterates everything around them, separating the family and severely injuring the mother (Watts, who received an Oscar nomination for best lead actress). What happens in the aftermath is incredible.

In the humble opinion of the Film Society, J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) is one of the best young directors on the planet.
