New E-Books Have Arrived!

Access to reading and researching is getting even easier at the Cannon Memorial Library as more e-books were recently added to the catalog!

In order to enjoy one of the e-books listed below, click on an image to direct yourself to the book with the catalog. From there, just open the e-book up and enjoy!

New Look for the Ebrary Database

The ebrary database underwent a recent makeover, and the result is a simpler, streamlined appearance.  However, the appearance is not the only thing that changed.  They also added features that allow for greater retrieval.  

Some advantages include:

• Better intuitive detection functions which increase discovery
• Higher text quality and display options for better readability
• More focused on key tasks such as copy, print, download, and in-book searches

Upon first glance, you may feel that nothing has changed; however, once you click on a specific book title you will open up all of the transformations!

The new design allows you to easily read your book online or download for offline reading, add to your bookshelf to read at another time, as well as cite the book within multiple citation styles. 

Once in the book, you can easily search within the text, create annotations, copy passages, print pages, and highlight important terms.

Now you know about some of the many new features that the new ebrary database offers, check it out to see if they have a book for you.  Whether it is for leisurely reading or a research paper, ebrary may have the very book you need as it offers over 144,000 ebook titles within a variety of subjects.

What should you do if you can’t find any books that meet your needs within ebrary?  Then take a look at one of the other ebook databases or search the library catalog.  You also can contact the reference desk and ask a reference librarian for help locating the item that you need.

Compare and Contrast with FindTheBest.com

Do you need to write a research paper where you need to compare and contrast different elements within such topics as religion or art?  If so, FindTheBest.com is a great place to start your research!  It is a vast website where you can analyze the similarities and differences within a variety of subjects.

On the site, you can type in a search for a specific topic or browse through the different categories.  For example, if you want to compare Protestantism with Catholicism, you can type “religions” in the search bar to see a list of all the religions.  From there, you click on which religions you want to compare and then click “compare now” to see a side-by-side description of the two religions.

Or, let’s say that you say that you want to compare portrait paintings completed by Leonardo da Vinci during the end of the 15^th Century.  Under the Browsing section, click on Educational Resources under the References tab and locate European Art.  Within the European Art subdivision, type in the artist’s name, and then click on the intended time period, form, and genre.  From there, you will see all his portrait paintings that he completed during those dates.  Then, just click on which ones that you want to compare.

Once you get the initial comparisons from FindTheBest, don’t stop there!  Make sure to go to the LibraryWebsite to search for related information.  Search for a book (print or electronic) within the catalog and a scholarly article within the databases.   Books and scholarly journals are important as they support the original comparison found on FindTheBest.com with scholarly information needed for your research paper.

New Electronic Books Added to the Collection

Do you need an electronic book for a research paper or leisurely reading?  Cannon Memorial Library recently added a variety of new electronic books to their collection.  If you see one that you want to read, just click on the book image in order to directly link to that book within the library catalog.  You can then open the book and read it on your computer online or download it for later viewing.

If you do not see an electronic book of interest, take a look at the library catalog as we may already have what you are looking for.  Stay tuned as we are continually adding exciting new electronic books to our collection.

Locate Company Information with LexisNexis®

Do you need to locate information on a specific company, such as financial data, key executives, or top competitors?  If so, use Hoover’s Company Records within the LexisNexis® database.  

Follow these steps in order to retrieve a wealth of company information.

• First, you will need to enter our library web page at www.saintleo.edu/library and select Databases from the left column.

• Next, scroll down and select LexisNexis®.  You will need to login using your SLU username and password.

• Once you are in the LexisNexis® Database, select “Advanced Options” under the red search box.

• Then, under Content Type, deselect all but Company Profile.

• Now, type “Hoover Company and Industry Reports” within the Source box, and then click “Apply”.

• On the next screen, type the company name you want to search in the red search box, and the search to retrieve all of the results.

• From there, you will see a list of items to explore; just click on the one that matches your specific need.

• Also, if you want to narrow further, click on an item from the “Multiple Groups” section on the left.

Introducing Saint Leo University's new Distance Learning Librarian.

Hello Students, Faculty, Staff, and Viewers of the SLU library blog! My name is Theresa Whitehead and I am the new Distance Learning Librarian here at the Cannon Memorial Library. I assist the Distance Learning faculty and students with all of their scholarly information needs by developing and coordinating services for their programs.  

In addition, I will be the new co-editor of this blog. I will alert you to all of the new materials added to the collection, exciting events taking place in the library, as well as providing you with instructions on how to use our online resources. 

I look forward to assisting you with your research needs while you complete your studies here at Saint Leo University.
